Edit Workshop Evaluation

In our my clip the 180 degree rule was used continuously, we used this to keep the audience aware of where the actors are located for example Tianna on the left and Delon on the right the whole way through. In the 180 degree we had to act as if there was a line in between the actors that the camera can not go past. The 180 degree rule is a great way to keep the audience without getting confused.

                               180 Degree rule

Rule of thirds was included in every shot, it was a guide to keep our actors in the right position and not directly in the centre. We had to make sure that the eyes were 1/3 of the way down the camera which was the only part we found quite difficult about the rule of thirds.

Match on action was used when my main actor enters the canteen, we film her from the back and then change camera to the front. We use this to make sure that the storyline flows through and looks more polished. Match on action connects 2 different camera angles together and makes them look like one whole action.

The challenges I had to face during production were the limited amount of filming time and the location. I only had two lessons to film this which was a reasonable time but as our location was busy on the first day of filming so we had to wait till the second lesson to film our whole clip. I had to make sure that every little detail was the same in every shot and these details were also a challenge. In the location which was the canteen the lighting was very bright so I had to make sure that I had the camera angles were away from the light. Another challenge faced was keeping the actors away from any distractions and keeping them focused through out the whole process of filming, for these reasons we had to re-film some shots which kept us slightly off our schedule.

If I was to film again the change I would make would be to use the tripod at all times, as I think in some shots the camera was slightly shaken. I think because of this reason my work may not have looked as professional as I hoped. If I had the chance of re-filming I would also include more close up shots especially when the main character fells over and the expression on her face.
Editing again would give me the chance to make this establishing shot at the beginning 2 seconds longer as I think that it was too quick and my audience may have missed what the sign board said.  Another change I would make to my edit would be to make one of my shots flow more like all the other in my continuity exercise.
Overall strengths of my work would be the way I have followed my storyboard throughout the process of filming and stayed very organised with which shots to film first.
Another strength would be how I have included all the shot types that were asked to used such as the 180 degree rule, match on action and shot/reverse shot. The way these shots have been used are extremely clear so that then my audience would be able to recognise as they watch, this is what I was hoping for so it would also be one of the strong points.

Here is an example of how I have used my match on action clearly towards my audience.

The overall weakness would again be how the camera was not sturdy during the end of my clip and for this reason I think it would be one of the thing I would defiantly change if I was to re-film.

Continuity Editing Exercise

In this exercise I was asked to create a scenario where one person enters a room and creates conversation with another member who is present in the same room and then walk out. In this task we were asked to use different types of media language skills such as match on action, shot/reverse shot and 180-degree rule.

The main media language I used were 180 degree rule, rule of thirds, shot/reverse shot and match on action. I used 180 degree rule throughout the whole of my 30 second clip meaning my actors would have to both stay on the same side in every shot. By using 180 degree rule it makes the shots flow creating it to be more easier for audience to understand.

In my clip the shot/reverse shot is shown when two actors are having a conversation, during this the camera switches from one actor to the other and then back. I think by using this it makes my work look more professional.

Match on action was used when my main actor walks away from the canteen and is filmed from the back and then from the front. By using match on action it adds the effect of continuity, it shows the same action but at a different angles.

To plan this clip I worked with Nazrin who I have worked with previously in my other media work. I also filmed this with her and I thought we were a good team as we finished the clip the way we hoped to, I think when planning this we found it quite easy and agreed with each others ideas on the concept of the 30 second clip being about a person falling over and being laughed at. We agreed to have a two antagonist and one protagonist in our clip to make it humorous as well as relatable.

In my opinion I personally think this grouping was successful as we both were very keen on making our clip exceptional and including all the key camera languages asked. We took each other’s ideas in consideration and tried to include different types of camera shots in each clip. We both divided out the work equally so we do not face any problems when filming.

My creativity shows a lot through this clip, I tried to make this very realistic by including a real life situation. I was creative when including the shot/reverse shot as I used it in a conversation between the two bullies to show how they talk about the main character and how they despise her and want to cause harm. I did this to show realism and to make the storyline a lot easier to understand. I also showed my creativity by using the match on action when the main character walks in. I filmed her walking in from the back and changed to the front, I found this quite a creative way to represent match on action. By using match on action this way I believe it makes my clip look more professional. To show the main characters point of view I used the camera in first person, I think this is quite creative as the audience can see what she is going through and may be able to relate. It also shows how a person would react to a situation like this. Throughout the whole 30 second clip I used the 180 degree rule and kept each character on the same side.

Our storyboard was very useful as it kept us on track through the whole process, it helped us understand which scenes were hardest meaning that we had to film it first and spend more time on it than then the others. The storyboard did not need much changing as we stuck to it, the only extra we added to the clip which was not on the storyboard was the first person view of the main character. Each of our clips were 3 seconds but I think we might change them to be a few seconds longer and I think 3 second would not be long enough for certain scenes, but overall the whole clip will be within the time limit.
